Ok everyone, the day has come. It's time to release the Synfig source code to the world. NOTE: Bandwidth issues should be fixed.
A Developer Preview
I am releasing the source code and some binaries for the purpose of trying to find some other individuals interested in helping me push the project forward. Don't expect to be able to do amazing things with this software just yet. It needs some work. If you are interested in helping out, let me know!
Where is the developer website?
It's not quite ready yet. When it is, you'll be able to find it at www.synfig.com. If you go there now, you'll find my promotional site for Synfig. You are looking at it right now.
Tutorial
This program needs a lot of work in the user-friendlieness department. Thus, reading the tutorial is mandatory! You can find the first tutorial here.
Binaries
All binaries (including windows binaries) can be found here.
Dependencies
Synfig Core requires the following libraries to build:
- Libsigc++ 2.0
- Libxml++ 1.0 (although 2.x may work)
Synfig Studio requires the following libraries to build:
- Gtkmm 2.4
Source
If you are feeling adventurous, you can try building Synfig from the source tarballs. You can find them here
Having build issues? Go here.
Support
If you would like to report a bug, join the mailing list, make a feature request, or whatever, then check out the Synfig SourceForge Project Page.
The Synfig API Reference is available online for your convenience.
License
All of the code released today is released under the GNU GPL. Ignore the alpha license included in the binaries. I'll change it out soon.
Thanks
Special thanks goes to:
- Adrian Bentley (Engineer) - My business partner and good friend. Has made significant contributions to the codebase.
- Rabecha Lenhart (Animator) - Ninja Artist.
- William Short (Animator) - Too bad everyone thinks he's Mexican.
- Darrin Michelson (Graphic Designer) - Everyone's favorite Jew.
Conclusion
Whew... Well, there you go. Three years of my life. Rip it apart, people.

I downloaded the Mac OS X version and it seems that there are a couple of errors that prevent me to run it. Here are the errors:

I've been looking for something for Vector based graphics and this looks like great work. Compiled on Gentoo Linux no problem. Looks like great potential so far. I'll be learning it in the next while. Thanks for your work, Dave

I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.3 and the X11 that came on my Tiger CD, and I get the same error messages that Javier reports when I try to run the latest Synfig developer preview.

I'm seeing the same problem as Richard and Javier when running OS X 10.4.3 and Apple's X11. Hope to see the problem fixed soon ... the app looks quite cool!

Hello,
First, congratulation for your work!
I try to do basic animation (a simple boucing ball)with Synfig, but don't understand how to do it.
Do you have some documentation or tutorial? I looked for it but didn't success. Soory if you already answer this question.
By the way, i work on a project, a 3min short for next frebruary and would to use synfig to do it. So, if you have some doc... Today, we use an old version of ToonBoom studio express.

Synfig looks like a really unique program. I'm interested in using it to make a short film. I'm planning to make the entire film by rotoscoping footage shot on video, and I'm definitely open to the idea of experimenting with the program itself. Would Synfig allow me to do rotoscoping?
Thanks -Gawan

Hello
I'm working on a series of 5 books in Dutch (for easycomputing, a Belgian publisher - that's why my English is not that good). They are meant for kids. One book will handle computeranimation. Because I only want to include "open source"tools I started looking for open source animationtools. I downloaded Synfig for Windows after installing GTK. Now I'm struggling with a “dll-hell”. The application tells me that it doesn't find “libsynfig-0.dll”. One of my computers runs on Ubuntu... so installing Synfig on that system wouldn't be a problem. But most of my readers are Windowsusers and it would be nice if there was a (beta) Windowsbinary without those dll-problems. A book on Synfig would be very nice, I guess? Anyone who can help me?

Pablo:
Look at the bug tracker, the wish list page on the wiki and write some patches, submit them and visit us on IRC to ask us to apply them.
Otherwise, use synfig, find some flaws and create some good animation examples.

Hello!
I'm a spanish user that has no idea about compilating or building and so on... You can laugh. I'm supposed to be an artist but still just a user. Anyway, I'm quite interested in the program, looks really fine. Will I be able to use it with my limited knowledge? Got an amazin wacom tablet and I want to give it a try with this stuff. I'd help this within my possibilities...
Thank you

Nice project, looking good.
Now, regarding your thanks...Too bad everyone thinks he's Mexican... what's that supposed to mean? Don't ruin your great work with such remarks.

Is this going to be a competitor to Flash? I hope so.
Monday, February 19, 2007
Leo: that isn't a specific goal, really the direction it takes depends on the patches that people write for it.
Also, everyone should check out the version in SVN if they are able.

i was just sitting down about to start on a parody animation project when i stumbled upon this. A free alternative to Flash i thought. Worth a try. There are many things i like better about Synfig. But most of all no more manual tweening. Rejoice!
Unfortuanately, i can't seem to get my version to render my animations. this might be the program's fault but probably more likely mine. any advice?

Shmollum: either check out the FAQ page on the wiki or come talk to us on IRC or write a detailed email to the synfig-user list.

I just wish you'd let me (and other people that would express their interest through a sign-up box) know when a beta version would be out. I tried a couple of times to install synfig and given the fact that I couldn't I felt it was a sign that I wasn't ready for the developer's preview. it looks really nice and I'd love to help the project out but I just recently finished my “Hello World” program in C++ so I guess it'll be a while before I can dedicate myself to some project like this one. so anyways, give me the head's up if you can

JunCTionS: Please try the SVN version, it is much more stable.
Anyway, come join us on IRC or say hi on the mailing list!

Hi!
I'm trying to install synfig. I use OpenSuse 10.2. I've downloaded the packages for Suse, and it didn't work, asks a lots of files.
Then, I'm trying to install compilling, but when I use ./configure, it stop asking for libxml++. I have it (version 2.6), and it keeps asking, stopping the installation. What am I doing wrong?
Tks

Emanuel: please come onto IRC, so we can help you debug it in realtime. For compiling, were you using svn, or the released source code?
For the OpenSuse problem, please contact the person that made the opensuse rpms and tell them about it.
