New developer

Since darco has been a bit busy as of late, he as given me access to add news postings here, the subversion repository and the SourceForge project for closing bugs and stuff. My role will be to filter, fix and feed bug fixes and patches from the user community into the subversion repository. Since I am a newbie when it comes to animation, your feedback is important for me. I also only use Linux/Windows, so I'll rely on others to test the MacOS builds. I should be able to find OSX build machines though. Jump onto the wiki, irc channel and bug tracker and get contributing!!
For those who don't know me, I've been involved in Synfig since I started packaging it for debian. Mainly I helped work out some compilation and copyright issues.

Hi pabs! I want to thank you all for the effort on this software. It is amazing. If you are interested in patches about Synfig, I have found a patch at this address to make synfigstudio to work with gtkmm-2.8
That way I could be able to use Synfig under Ubuntu 5.10.

Sorry, the address did not appear. http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/synfigstudio/synfigstudio/synfigstudio-0.61.03-gtkmm-2.8.patch

Someone already submitted that patch (link below), and I've applied it in SVN version 118, so it will be in the next release. Please forward any patches from distributions into the patch tracker.

this is great; please make fedora and ubuntu
Thursday, February 9, 2006
As far as ubuntu goes, etl is in debian (and ubuntu), synfig is in debian's NEW queue (packages must be checked for legal and other problems before entering debian), and synfigstudio packages are ready. When they have entered debian, ubuntu can sync from them. We maintain the packages on svn.debian.org in the pkg-synfig repository.
I've no idea how to create a fedora package, but you are welcome to contribute one!

I get the same error as johnd does. libsigc-2.0-0,dll and the program will not start up. It sounds like a cool program but pretty much useless if it does not start. Is there any way to fix this?
Saturday, February 11, 2006
to solve the problem with libsigc:
add to the user variable path: C:\Programme\Common Files\GTK\2.0\bin

i'm currently using Ubuntu, and i've found the deb packages at http://www.gnome.gr.jp/~ss/t/synfig/ im not a linux power user, so it would be great to use synaptic to install synfig from ubuntu supported repository; (i think im able to install from deb files,though);
for fedora, found rpms at http://www.nrpms.net/Packages/fedora-4-i386/testing/synfig.html;
Sunday, February 12, 2006
ok, im using this... but how do i export to swf or mov? will linux have this possibility?
Sunday, February 12, 2006
Instead of using those .debs under Ubuntu (you are probably better off compiling it yourself), I recommend that you work on getting the Debian ones into Ubuntu.
I've added the Fedora RPMs to the download page.
synfig doesn't yet have SWF export capability (patches welcome). For MOV, either use the ffmpeg ouput plugin or convert from lots of PNGs to a single MOV using an external tool.

NO ICONS IN X11 -> Hi! Your work is great, but i cant tweak around that much, cause there are no button-icons loaded. I have synfig on macosx10.4.4 with x11 installed. Do you have a fix?
Tuesday, February 14, 2006
This really isn't a support forum, please use the support tracker on sf.net or the synfig-user forum/mailing list for support.
I personally don't have a Mac, or the money for one, so you will have to provide some more info - where are the files? where is synfig looking for them? (hint: try strace).

Just wanted to say thanks very much for making this available as open source. I haven't tried it yet (and probably won't have time for a while yet), but this looks really cool! Between Synfig and Blender (covering 2d and 3d), it is a good time to be into animation.

A. Fernandes: This really isn't a support forum, please use the support tracker on sf.net or the synfig-user forum/mailing list for support.
Secodly, please read the list of major issues on the download page and wiki (and in the bug tracker) before posting.

Hi all!
This seems like awesome software. I would like to use it under Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed - but after I fixed the path/Environment Variable (as stipulated above) I get the following error “The procedure entry point gmaindepth could not be located in the dynamic link libarary libglib-2.0-0.dll.” Please let me know if there is a fix for this since I would like to test drive the software.
Kind regards.

hi, downloaded windows binaries yesterday and had lots of dll related problems. solved them all. The key to this is to enviromental variables path thing. c:\windows\system32 was in path and it contained some old versions of dll-s from GTK package. Delete those with and windows will find new dll from your c:\GTK\bin .
windowsXP sp 2
interesting program. Crashes a lot

Hi,
in win version on my XP sp 2 I've resolved:
Append in SYS variables
;C:\Programmi\File comuni\GTK\2.0\bin
It WORKS !!!
Bye Bye Botty

I've been looking forward to trying this out, but I get: “This application has failed to start because libsynfig-0.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.” Maybe a priority on the Wiki page might be an install guide.
Tuesday, April 11, 2006
Also get “This application has failed to start because libsynfig-0.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.” Any ideas? Tried the usual Variable stuff, but no go. By the way the default install for GTK appears to be c:\GTK in Windows [ not into program files folder ] - Look forward to a resolution that works ...

Hey im having troubles. The GTK file.. I dont have the bin. I have the bin in gtkmm
Monday, May 1, 2006
I installed everything indicated, added the variables, and everything, but when I try to run it, it brings up a MS DOS Command Line box, it flashes something on there, then it closes and nothing happens. Anyone know how to fix this?
Monday, May 1, 2006
never mind I got it to work.
Friday, May 12, 2006
Congratulations! This is a GREAT software and I am so sure that I will become another Killer Application, especially when you talk about GNU plataforms. There's a good tip for Windows users that aims to use Synfig in a more productive, fast, and with a less crashing experience... Use it on Linux ^_^b
Regards!

hey, Ive been looking for some software like this for Linux (Suse 10.1 64 bit AMD chip) and was a little bummed to see it not having a RPM for my distro (Suse 10.1) I hope that we will be seeing this soon. Red Hat and Fedora arent the only distros in town
)
Thanks
Tuesday, June 20, 2006
Distro packages are provided by users and developers of those distros. If you want to have SUSE RPMs, you need to either volunteer to build them or find/pay someone to do so.
Let us know where SUSE RPMs can be downloaded and we'll add a link to the download page.

There are a couple of omissions in the instructions on how to correct the windows missing libraries problem that BottyE wrote and also have to mention that the line he wrote (the path is in another language, take a look at their path example C:\Programme <–Do you See?) For english users is C:\Program Files\Common Files\GTK\2.0\bin So you have to be carefull with the language of your Windows cause the path varies with it. Also cause the people that will use this software are mostly artists and not programers I think I should post an expanded install instructions for Windows users as I had to do. I did not run into the second dll errors problem that is mentioned here but the path is also in another language for English Users (C:\Programmi\File comuni\ <–See?) again in English it is C:\Program Files\Common Files\GTK\2.0\bin
This is what I did:
1- First Install The gtkmm Libraries (These are not the same as the GTK+ that is required for software like The Gimp cause I had these in my computer already and it didn't work) As far as I know the GTKmm that you have to download from the Synfig site install additional things in the GTK directory from what I observed. 2- Run the Synfig Installer. 3- Run the Synfigstudio Installer. 4- Go to to My Computer (In the Windows Start Menu, not the shortcut on the desktop because if you do this what you will see is not My computer properties but the My Computer icon properties) and click it with the right mouse button. When the menu appears click on properties (What you see is the same as when you go to the Control Panel and double click the System icon). Click the Advanced tab and then the Environment Variables button at the bottom. In User variables add to the one named PATH a line that indicates the path to the GTK libraries. To do so click the PATH variable once to select it and then click the Edit button once. In the windows that appears there should be the word PATH in the top square that you will leave as is. What you will edit is the line in the second box that is called Variable value: Here you will add this line:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\GTK\2.0\bin
but if there is a previous value entered there such as C\qt\bin (In my case this was there already because other software that was installed in my computer previously) you will not delete this to add the new line, you will add the new line at the end of this previous line by placing a semicolon after it and the line we gave you after the semicolon without any blank spaces as in the following example:
C\qt\bin;C:\Program Files\Common Files\GTK\2.0\bin
5- Run the program and it should run fine now.

Hi is there a limit to the amount of characters that you can write in this post? Because I been trying to post some important things for the dll problems here and I don't see most of the message that I put.

This is what darco had to say:
(11:31:47) darco: it is likely because of my “strip out the bad things” pass that all comments go thru. At the moment, it is really stupid, anything between a < and a > is stripped out... (it's just using php's striptags function). I should really re-write it to be smarter (11:32:16) darco: as for a size limit, I really doubt that he is reaching it... I think it's just getting mangled away (11:32:36) darco: sounds like he needs to post it to the mailing list
IMO, workarounds for the DLL problems belong in the relevant bugs in the bug tracker, please post them there.

For kurt and aidanodr above. I also ran into these missing libsynfig-0.dll message after fixing the GTK path problem and I realised that I had installed the Synfig Studio files only and not the other Synfig files. I thought that perhaps I also had to install the that so I installed both, Synfig and Synfig Studio and that did the trick. After that, the software ran. I hope this helps.

Sorry the middle sentence of my last post should read:
I thoght that perhaps I also had to install that so...

Hey, I have been trying to find a substitute for macromedia flash as I do not have the money for it and I think I may have found something that fits the bill. But whenever I try running it, it says “This application has failed to start because libglibmm-2.4-1.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem”. I tried that, and it didn't work. What do I do?
Saturday, February 24, 2007
Nick C: please try the new unofficial Windows build listed on the download page. It is based on a recent SVN version and should have much less problems. Also there are documented workarounds for this issue in the older builds on that page.
I'm sure there must be ways of getting access to flash if you have no money, maybe you can use a friends computer sometimes?

I would love to see a portable version of this software. I have started a thread on www.portableapps.com (Requested Apps) Let us know if it can be done.
The portabel apps suite has GTK in a common folder on the poen drive for other OS apps that have been converted

EDIT: This comment contains bad advice, see the next one I had a crapload of problems trying to get the software installed on windows. My own damn fault, I know.
But here's how it's done, if it must be done.
Step 1: Install GTK+ or The GIMP software.
Step 2: Install gtkmm runtime.
Step 3: Add the following to your PATH variable: C:\Program Files\Common Files\GTK\2.0\bin
Step 4: Run BOTH the synfig studio and synfig installers.
If you have more problems add the following to your PATH: C:\Program Files\Synfig\bin
Either that or whatever folder you installed synfig into.

Morichalion: That is the wrong advice: instead, use the unofficial Windows SVN version by Atrus (see download page). Install GTKmm (from gnome.org) to the default location and let it set environment variables for you. Then install Atrus' synfig binaries and all will be well. Unfortunately the uninstall doesn't work well at the moment, but that may be fixed soon.
